Our ballet curriculum has been developed over the past twenty years, with the goal of providing a safe, correct, holistic, and FUN approach to ballet training. We seek to meet all the dancers where they are, to teach them to work with their bodies' strengths and weaknesses, to help them overcome obstacles, and grow in their skills and confidence.
We strive to balance the whole dancer and put thought into training and developing the mind, body, and spirit. Here are just a few examples
Mind: technique, ballet theory, memorization, spatial awareness, body and muscle awareness, rhythm and musicality,
Body: Strength, flexibility, turnout, footwork, port de bras, balance, alignment, coordination
Spirit: Creativity, performance, friendship, teamwork, goal setting, confidence, body positivity
For Pre-Ballet and Primary students, we focus on coordination and confidence as we work on basic ballet and movement skills, setting the foundation for future training. We often utilize props, which adds a fun element to classes.
In Beginning level and higher, we also use skill cards, which help the students track their own progression through the level. Because dancers must move at their own pace, and many levels may take 2 or more years to complete, it really helps students to see here they are at and have clear goals to progress.
The skill cards are made up of barre, center, and allegro exercises learned within their level and rank (each level has 2 ranks). The students receive one + when they are introduced to a skill, ++ when they make progress and have the general idea, and +++ when they have mastered a skill with the technique and strength expected for their level. There is a minimum amount of points needed to pass each rank. Once they pass a level, they are welcome to join the next level. Most of the time, this will happen towards the end of the school year, but it can occur at other times, as the students need.
